Luna, Belgian Malinois Portrait Painted in Oil

Luna, Belgian Malinois Portrait
11 x 14 Oil on Canvas
Carole Rodrigue ©2017
SOLD

Everyone, this is Luna, a gorgeous Malinois with such beautiful haunting eyes that I wanted to paint her so that the eyes were the focus.  For this reason I used a dark background.  All of the comments I've received about this painting have been about the eyes, so mission accomplished!

Luna is the second Belgian Malinois painting I've recently completed and I am now working on another Malinois commission, this time with THREE dogs!  I'm really humbled and honoured that people are liking my Malinois paintings and I'm fortunate to be getting these requests by Malinois owners.  It is such a joy to paint these dogs and I look forward to painting many, many more!

Stay tuned for another Belgian Malinois portrait coming soon!

Golden Retriever Portrait in Oil

Ginger
11 x 14 oil on canvas
Carole Rodrigue ©2016
SOLD

This private commission was painted as a a very special memorial gift for Christmas.  When I saw the reference, I gasped at how beautiful this dog was and knew that this would be a very special painting.

While I'm very saddened for the client and her family that their beloved dog is now gone, I'm so honoured that I was selected to paint this beauty.  The reference was perfect: it was high resolution, clear with very visible eyes and features, and beautiful soft outdoor lighting.  The pose was so sweet, expressing a loving gentleness. It's the sort of reference that artists dream about because you just know this is going to be a very special piece.

I'm told it brought tears to the owner, but I hope this painting will now bring fond memories and smiles.

American Bulldog Oil Painting

American Bulldog Portrait
8 x 10 Oil
© 2016 Carole Rodrigue
SOLD

This American Bulldog was a loyal, loving, and gentle family pet that passed a few years ago.   The portrait was commissioned as a special gift.  I'm told she was such a loved dog and is missed very much, so I hope this painting brings joy for many years to come.  I cannot express how much I enjoyed painting this one.  There were so many interesting variations in colour and capturing the gentleness in the eye  was important for me.  I also deliberately painted very soft edges around her head to create the gentle air I'm told this girl had.

I've more portraits to show after the holidays, but I couldn't wait to show this one, and it's safe to do so.  I hope you enjoyed this painting, and have a very Merry Christmas!

Pudlepointer Pet Portrait

Blitz the Pudlepointer
8 x 8 soft pastel on sanded paper
Carole Rodrigue ©2016

Blitz the Pudlepointer (I love that name!) was the winner in my Facebook contest for a free pet portrait.  (By the way, please go give my page a LIKE.  I'd really love you, and thank you.)

I cannot tell you how much fun it was to paint this gorgeous fella.  I love the soft window light as he gazes out at who knows what.  It is definitely the type of painting I love to work on!

This was also the first time I worked with sanded paper.  I love how it takes a lot of pastel layers without being fussy.  Since I love to work in a lot of layers with my oil paints, it's definitely suitable for my style of work. I'll definitely be working with this again.

I hope you enjoy Blitz the Pudlepointer!  If you want to inquire about your own pet portrait commission, visit my website by clicking HERE.

Commissioned Dog Painting in Oil #petportrait

Gypsy
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2016
Private commission
SOLD

A few weeks ago I received an email from someone asking me to paint their dog.  When she sent me the photo, I just fell in love with this dog's sweet face.  Her eyes express such a sweet and gentle disposition, as well as an innocent curiosity.  I've seen this look often in my own dog, so I know it well and it just melts my heart.

The pink bow on Gypsy also lends to the sweetness she displays.

Painting this sweet dog was such a pleasure.  I thoroughly enjoyed painting this pet portrait and am so happy that I was able to make her owner very happy by capturing her beloved dog on canvas!

I hope you enjoyed this painting!

Boxer Portrait in Oil Completed!

Boo Boo, 8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2016
Private Collection

This is Boo Boo.  Boo Boo is a very special Boxer.  She is four years old and is the beloved dog of a family with three children. My family. She is owned by my stepdaughter and family.   One of the children is a three year old toddler who has never known a day without his best buddy Boo Boo. Boo Boo has watched over him since the day he came home from the hospital and has been his loyal companion since.  There were times when he was a baby that I could swear they had their own language going on, that's how close they were.

My grandson would step all over her while he was learning to walk, and she would patiently lay there and kiss her baby.  Wherever he went, she followed.  She is the sweetest, most gently dog you could ever encounter.  She was a bouncing handful when she was a pup, but grew to be so loving and gentle, and very comical.

Sadly, Boo Boo had a tumour removed from her leg a couple of years ago.  She has done really well and was cancer free all this time, but recently got lymphoma.  Boo Boo is not expected to make it longer than another five months or so.  She is on chemo and is being kept very comfortable and pain free.  It's very heartbreaking to know she will be so missed by a family that has treated her as one of their own, like a furry human.  My grandson will miss her so much once she leaves.  He understands she is sick and will soon have to go, but none of us are looking forward to that day.

I decided to paint this before that time.  I felt it was better they have this before, this way it might be easier for them when they receive it.

It's never easy to lose a loved one, and our four-legged family members are just as well loved and important.  They leave a huge hole in our hearts when they leave us and each is unique and irreplaceable.

It wasn't my goal to make this be a depressing post, but I wanted to share just how special this pet portrait was, as they all are.

Thank you so much for looking and for reading.  I will be back tomorrow with another painting and another story.  It's the week for stories in my work.

In case you missed it . . .  watch me painting a Shih Tzu dog portrait in oil from start to finish. This time lapse video is condensed from over 8 hours of painting. Enjoy!
